Honey Bees – What’s The Buzz?

We have all heard in the news how our bee colonies are in decline – in the UK alone the number has halved since 1985 due to changes in land use, the varroa mite (which spreads disease within bee colonies), and cold wet summers.

But how does this affect us?
Honey bees are vital for sustaining our ecosystem because they pollinate the majority of the fruit, vegetables and crops that end up on our plates. Without the honey bee, our environment could change dramatically.

Bees also contribute £200 million a year to the British economy through the production of honey.  Their loss is a major threat to crops and human food production.

What can we do to help?
Simple things, such as providing the right habitats.  By planting bee-friendly plants, flowers, trees and vegetables, bees will be encouraged into our gardens.  Bee-friendly flowers and vegetables include foxgloves, lavender, forget-me-nots, apples, runner beans and raspberries.

A number of associations and UK companies have initiated some great campaigns to help the plight of the Bee, for example:-

The British Bee-keepers Association welcomed 5,000 new members last year (a rise close to 50%) as more people wish to help the bee’s plight by keeping their own bee hives.  If you don’t like the idea of having a bee hive in your garden (it can be quite a shock opening a hive and seeing 50,000 bees working away), you could adopt a hive and help encourage the growth of new colonies in an area local to you.  For more information visit http://www.adoptabeehive.co.uk/

Adopt A Bee (or 50,000)!

The National Trust is encouraging people to ‘BEE PART OF IT’ this summer.  To help tackle the problem the trust is introducing 45 new honey bee colonies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  Every hive is being adopted by a BBC Local Radio station who will tell the story of their hive across the summer.  As part of the project, every BBC Local Radio station will be giving away 1,000 packets of bee-friendly wild flower seeds (subject to availability) for listeners to sow in their gardens.

Innocent Drinks are working alongside the National Trust to help create the new bee hives and supply all the kit for the beekeepers.

Innocent have produced a limited edition Lemon, Honey and Ginger smoothie which comes with bee friendly wild flower seeds so you can create a bee-friendly garden or window box yourself.

Beauty Connection – Our tribute to the bee
Paddywax has created Journey of the Bee – a premium collection of candles designed as a tribute to nature’s hardest worker, the bee.  Its series of six delightful fragrances denotes the various stages of the bee’s journey – from early blossoms of sweet clover through to the raw honey in the hive.

Journey of the Bee - Our tribute to nature's hardest worker!

Paddywax will be working with Bee Conservation to ensure the protection of the bee and will be investing in initiatives to encourage the growth of the global bee population.

Benefits of beeswax candles:-

Prized since ancient times, beeswax is produced by honey bees to build the honeycomb walls.  This natural wax has been used for many things including cosmetics, skincare and candles.  Beeswax is referred to as the premium wax which has a number of benefits:-

Why Stock Aromatic Diffusers?

Aromatic Reed Diffusers - The perfect way to fragrance a home

As I have mentioned in previous articles fragrance plays a big part in our daily life whether it be waking up to the smell of coffee, walking down the street and getting a waft of a perfume or cologne that reminds you of an ex (admit it, we’ve all been there!) or simply walking into a restaurant and being hit by the wonderful aroma of food to get the taste buds going.

We take on so many fragrances in any one day, we probably won’t acknowledge a majority of them – and to be honest, sometimes that’s probably not a bad thing!  There is one place we can control fragrance, however, and that’s in the home.  Fragrancing a home allows you to transport yourself to a special place, create a little oasis, or just disguise smells you don’t want in the house!

Candles have traditionally been used to create the perfect fragrant ambience but aromatic diffusers have taken the home fragrance market by storm in the last 5 years.  Their popularity continues to grow at a phenomenal rate and they are predicted to soon hold the largest share of sales in the home fragrance sector.

 So, what are diffusers?
Reed diffusers are a contemporary way of fragrancing the home, and are a perfect no flame, no hassle alternative to candles.  They provide that sought after sense of individuality with the necessary bonus of decorative flair, and make the scent of any space special.

How do they work?
It’s all very simple.  The reeds are placed in the bottle of fragrance oil, they absorb the oil which then travels through to the ends of the stick, diffusing into the surrounding space gradually and consistently over the following months.  To achieve a stronger fragrance the reed sticks can be flipped.  The longevity of the fragrance oil will depend on factors such as the size of space it is scenting, the ventilation within the space and the number of times the sticks are flipped.

What are the benefits of a diffuser?
□        Keeps spaces beautifully scented with minimum effort
□        Eliminate everyday odours in the home/work space
□        No soot onto your furniture, walls and ceiling
□        Last longer than flowers and are safer than candles (you don’t need to worry about blowing them out at night!)
□        Fragrance levels can be controlled
□        No power outlet is required
□        They are perfect for personal use and gift giving
□        They look great!
□        Environmentally friendly

What makes a good diffuser?
There are so many diffusers currently available in the market it can be quite confusing when trying to decide which diffuser to go for.  When buying a diffuser brand there are a number of important factors to consider and I have summarised below a few key points to look for when making your choice:-
□        Effective reed sticks (with good absorbing qualities)
□        A high quality formulation (high fragrance oil content, no water, minimal alcohol)
□        Non-coloured (natural essence base) – colours mean additives
□        A simple decorative bottle – so it can sit comfortably in any room

Why Abode Aroma?

Abode Aroma’s Amazing Selection Of Stunning Fragrances

 □        Superior Formulation – Abode Aroma diffusers use the maximum level of fragrance oil and the minimum level of carrier possible – there is NO water in the product. The high level of fragrance oil, combined with very low levels of alcohol, will not only ensure outstanding fragrance impact but will give the product great longevity as the speed of evaporation will be retarded. The product has a natural essence base, with no added colour. (Coloured oils usually have high levels of water and alcohol which evaporate quickly so the product won’t last and the scent won’t permeate into the room)
□        Remarkable Longevity – Our diffusers, on average, will last up to 6 months! (that’s less than £5 a month to fragrance a space)
□        Contemporary Fragrance Range – allowing the consumer to create a ‘signature’ fragrance in their home
□        Vibrant Packaging – The packaging is so beautiful it almost requires no gift wrapping

In summary, aromatic reed diffusers are a convenient, low-maintenance alternative to standard home fragrancing techniques, keeping spaces beautifully scented with minimum effort.  If you are considering giving diffusers a go, Abode Aroma is a great brand to try as it provides a vast choice of premium quality fragrances at mid-market prices.

The Importance of Home Fragrance

The Importance of Home Fragrance

Our sense of smell has major impact on daily life and is the closest sense connected to the memory.  Fragrancing a home allows you to be transported to a special place and to create your own personal oasis that can be changed to suit your mood.

Fragrance follows lifestyle trends; at present relaxation and the ability to ‘chill’ are key elements to any survival guide.  Room fragrancers can promote calmness by evoking natural scents such as woody tones & ocean breezes.  They can also be stimulating, soothing and aid memory.  The sense of smell can be used for whatever mood or situation you want and are unique to you.

It is important to layer home fragrance as you would your own personal fragrance.  Don’t chose fragrances that clash, but ones that enhance each other.  A great way to layer fragrance is through candles, flowers and diffusers.  Candles and flowers will give you a short-burst of fragrance lasting a few days and an aroma diffuser will provide you with a constant delicate underlying scent that can last for months.

5 Key Fragrance Moods

A fragrance is personal, so there’s no real ‘rule’ about which fragrance is popular or works best in a room.  Here’s a brief guide to creating different ‘moods’ through fragrance:-

Simply Edible – certain ‘foodie’ aromas can lend an atmosphere of nostalgia – a fragrance such as Cinnamon or Ginger may rekindle happy memories of family times spent in the kitchen and create great feelings of well-being and reassurance.  We would recommend Paddywax’s Anjou Pear and Ginger from their Eco range – a wonderful collection that shows you don’t have to sacrifice style to ‘go green’.

Florals – The last couple of years have seen a return to classic fragrances with a contemporary twist such as ‘Lavender and White Tea’, appealing to both young & old.  Other current favourites such as Jasmine, Lilac and Gardenia are a great way to bring floral scents into your home.  Paddywax’s new range – Garden Crush – gives a fantastic choice of fragrant florals for the home!

Jasmine is just one of 6 beautiful floral fragrances available in the Garden Crush range

Clean & Green – we often crave scents from nature to bring the outdoors in all year round.  Fresh clean scents are usually inspired by ‘fantasy’ fragrances taken from nature’s elements, for example Rainforest, Ocean and Snowfall.  The beauty of nature and the current ‘green’ obsession is also growing the demand for green vegetable and aromatic herb based fragrances such as Fresh Grass, Thyme and New Mown Hay.  The perfect example of a ‘fantasy’ fragrance is Abode Aroma’s Marine Mint.

Abode Aroma's Marine Mint is a comforting oceanic scent evocative of fresh coastal breezes and stirring, stormy seas

Fresh – lively fragrances such as Green Tea and Fresh Grass are great for living areas and hallways because they are both revitalising and welcoming.  We find Paddywax’s Classic Green Tea & Lemongrass is perfect for creating an invigorating atmosphere.

Spice – rich scents that evoke the feeling of warmth & comfort are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the autumn months.  People want to bring the scent of warm woods and rare spices into the homes with fragrances such as Sandalwood and Cloves.  Abode Aroma’s Amber Diffuser is a subtle fragrance that brings comforting spices into the  home.

Amber gives the ultimate rich blend of woody notes and delicate spices

Fruity – the summer fragrance story is all about citrus - using ingredients and aromas more at home on a chopping board or cocktail menu.  Bold and breathtaking aromas such as Grapefruit and Lemon are sure to thrill the senses.  Why not try our taste sensation – Blood Orange

Blood Orange - With ingredients that belong on a chopping board, you will feel totally refreshed with this zingy fragrance!

So, whether you want to chill, feel revitalised, or ‘get romantic’ there is always a fragrance for you out there!

BEAUTY CONNECTION – AN INTRODUCTION

THE COMPANY
Husband and wife team Alistair and Louise Marley founded Beauty Connection Limited (or BCL as it is affectionately known) in 1998 and set out to develop own label home fragranced products for UK retailers. Starting off small (filling up bags of pot pourri in their living room) the Marleys soon hit the ground running and have been on an exciting journey supplying some of the most respected high street names.

Beauty Connection has grown as a company and become a respected specialist in the home fragrance market. In 2007 we took the big decision to move into branded products as we were keen to bring innovative and prestigious international home fragrance brands to the UK market. We launched with the pioneering Australian Aromatic Diffuser Brand – Abode Aroma – to the UK market and it has since become one of the market leaders in this sector.

Following the enormous success we had with Abode Aroma we have since added the leading US boutique candle range, Paddywax to our hopefully expanding portfolio.
